Elevating Classic Iftar Dishes with the Subtle Sweetness of Vanilla


Ramadan is a long-awaited holy month, especially for Muslims around the world. Ramadan is synonymous with sweet and refreshing menus for breaking the fast. Food or drinks that are commonly found during the fasting month generally have a sweet taste and some are added with flavorings or vanilla extract to strengthen the aroma and taste of the food. Besides many Iftar menus that can be found, here are some recommendations for Iftar menus that can be made easily and of course use additional vanilla extract or flavor to add flavor and aroma!


Kolak Pisang


Kolak pisang or banana compote is one of the most commonly found foods, especially during Ramadan. Banana compote is a typical Indonesian food originating from West Sumatra. The method of making banana compote also tends to be easy, of course, with the addition of vanilla essence to make the taste and aroma of banana compote even more appetizing!!!

The ingredients needed to make banana compote include

  • 2 bananas

  • 1 liter of water

  • 300 grams of palm sugar

  • 65 ml thick coconut milk

  • 150 grams of kolang-kaling 

  • 4 tablespoons sugar

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • 1 pandan leaf

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence

Banana compote is made in a fairly easy ways

  1. Palm sugar is put into heated water and stirred until liquid, 

  2. The other ingredients are added and waited until cooked with occasional stirring,

  3. Vanilla essence added to enhance the flavor and aroma of the banana compote, 

  4. The compote is ready to be served.



Vanilla Milk Pudding


Vanilla milk pudding can be made easily with affordable ingredients, of course, with the addition of vanilla paste that strengthens the vanilla aroma of the pudding.

Ingredients that can be prepared include

  • 1 packet of agar-agar powder

  • 800 ml of liquid milk

  • 2 egg yolks 

  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla paste

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • 125 grams of granulated sugar

Vanilla milk pudding is made as follows.

  1. Liquid milk, agar-agar, and sugar are poured into a saucepan and heated to boiling,

  2. The mixture that has boiled is taken a little to be mixed into the egg yolks that have been prepared and then stirred well with the entire milk mixture beforehand,

  3. Then, the mixture is added with vanilla paste and salt,

  4. After boiling, the pudding is ready to be poured into the mold and waited until it hardens for further served.


Vanilla Vla Pudding 


If you are bored with the usual pudding, pudding with vla is the right choice to try a new sensation in eating pudding. The addition of vla will add to the flavor of the pudding and vla can be paired with a variety of pudding flavors.

Here are the ingredients that need to be prepared to make vanilla pudding vla.

  • The pudding that has been made

  • 1 chicken egg with the yolk beaten loose 

  • 1½ tablespoons cornstarch dissolved in a little water

  • 250 ml full cream liquid milk

  • 50 grams granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

How to make vanilla pudding vla is as follows

  1. White liquid milk with egg yolks that have been beaten loose, cornstarch solution, and granulated sugar are mixed and then stirred until all ingredients are evenly mixed,

  2. The vla mixture is stirred using low heat until the mixture boils and thickens,

  3. The fire is turned off if the vanilla pudding vla has thickened then vanilla extract is added and stirred well,

  4. The vanilla pudding vla is allowed to stand until the vla is at room temperature,

  5. The vanilla pudding vla is ready to be poured as a topping for your favorite pudding dish.


Candil Porridge


Candil porridge is usually served in the afternoon as a leisure dessert. Candil porridge is made using glutinous rice flour, rice flour and sugar. Candil porridge is boiled until thick and the center is fully cooked. 

The ingredients required include 

  • 200 grams of glutinous rice flour

  • 1 tsp whiting water

  • 175 ml water

  • 750 ml water

  • 200 gram brown sugar

  • 3 pandan leaves

  • 2 tbsp rice flour, mix with 1 tbsp glutinous rice flour, dilute with a little water

  • Coconut milk sauce to taste

How to make bubur candil

  1. Combine glutinous rice flour, whiting water, and water. Form small rounds.

  2. Sprinkle a little dry flour to prevent sticking together. Boil with water, brown sugar, and pandan leaves.

  3. Strain and boil again. Add the dough rounds and reduce the water. Pour the liquid flour, stir until thickened and cooked.

  4. Serve with coconut milk sauce.
